Project Ç; Social Cohesion expressed in photography
Project Ç focuses on awareness of social cohesion on the island of Curaçao, and is an initiative of Marcel Truyens, Inonge Anandala and Jouke Schauwaert.
Curaçao’s community consists of 107 nationalities. This, was one of the facts that inspired Project Ç to try and understand what is it, that connects people of so many origins on one island. The initiators of project Ç decided to first understand this perspective from women. This research was done in a form of personal interviews with 16 carefully selected women, diverse in cultural backgrounds, age, profession, social status and life attitudes, as a representation of the Curaçao community.
The 16 diverse women who were interviewed, spoke about what connects them to other people and the island at large; That which builds and stimulate social cohesion on Curaçao. The results are what forms the first art project of Project Ç on Curaçao. Based on the interview, the women were photographed in an artistic way, working with a core statement from each interview, which in the photographs is translated into a photo pose, supported by the use of cultural fabrics as illustration of the women’s “connectivity”.
This photo exhibition was first introduced on Curacao on 2nd July, 2018 on Dia di Bandera (National Flag Day) and is an ongoing free outdoor exhibition that can be seen at different festivals in different neighborhoods of Curaçao.
Exactly 2 years later, the exhibition was opened on 2nd July, 2020 on Curacao’s Dia di Bandera, this time in the Netherlands at Museon in the Hague under Caribbean Ties. The exhibition will run up until 20th August, 2020.
